The Phoenix Hall was buzzing with a record turnout for our latest play reading day, with selections from nine plays read and rated by the room. That’s a lot of theatre, and a lot of opinions, which is exactly what we were hoping for.
The range included contemporary and classic comedies, dramas and three Kiwi works including a potential world premiere. There was something for everyone to champion, and the discussion that followed each reading reflected that.
Play reading day is one of the ways we make sure our season planning isn’t just a committee conversation. We take a professional approach to everything we put on stage, and we’re proud of that. But we’re also a community theatre at heart, and this is how we honour that. Everyone in the room gets to engage with the material, share their thoughts, and contribute a rating that the committee will use to shape our 2027 season.
Nine plays are now in the mix. The committee has some fantastic material to work with, and we can’t wait to share what we land on.
