Love Letters tells the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner through the notes, cards and letters they write each other from childhood to old age. Thank-you notes turn into love letters. Christmas cards carry decades of longing between the lines. Two people who might have been perfect for each other keep circling one another, pulled together and pushed apart by family and ambition and everything else life throws in the way. Andy is steady and dutiful, headed for the law and eventually the Senate. Melissa is wild and funny, an artist who never quite finds her footing. On paper they tell each other everything. In person, it's never quite that simple. This play asks a devastating question: what happens to the people we love when we only ever half let them in?
